This is the exhibition and workshops to produce the experience for people, which I and two of my younger classmates held at the studio in Omotesando, Tokyo, JAPAN. I presented my BA degree project called Shadow lurero to make the experience for children to feel reality with playing their shadows. It was the first time to show it to public, and I could see the different reactions of attendance compared to the last time, which I did this workshop with elementary students at school in Jan 2012. At the last time all of people know each other because they are classmates at school originally and I have known them since I did my internship to teach Art and Design for them at school. However, in this time it was the first time to meet all of people, and we needed to communicate to know each other. I personally think that to present our works for public to get their feedback and to develop our works more and more is very important and needed experiences for us, so I would like to produce these workshops continually to produce the experiences for people and to develop my works. Especially the Experience Design and Communication Design are required to present more constantly in Tokyo Japan such as the busiest city in the world.

codoömoteにご来場いただいたみなさま、またサロンの皆様はじめサポートしてくださった多くのみなさま、本当にありがとうございました。昨日3/6に東京、表参道にあるclementsalon*で７ヶ月にわたり制作してきた卒業制作Shadow lureroを、たくさんの方々に体験してもらいました。「影と出逢う、影とあそぶ、そこからこども達自身でなにか新しい発見や、あそびを見つけてくれたらいいな」という思いでつくってきたものだったので、workshop終了後も、大人の方を交えて影遊びを自由にやっていたのをみて、本当に嬉しかったです。

今年の１月に初めて、ある小学校のこども達とこのworkshopをやりましたが、その時は教育実習でそのこども達のことは知っていたし、こども達もみんなクラスメイトなので「はじめまして」から始まるものではありませんでした。昨日のworkshopは本当に皆さん「はじめまして」から始まり、同じ作品をやっても反応が様々で本当に貴重な体験でした。私たち自身、この様な活動を多く行い、たくさんの方々のリアクションを受け取ることで、これからの作品づくり、活動づくりがさらに発展していくと強く感じています。忙しく慌ただしい毎日が続く東京だからこそ、大人もこどもも関係なく、たくさんの経験をしていくことが大切なのではないだろうか。と改めて実感することができたイベントでした。

これからも色々なところで経験をデザインしていくので、どうぞよろしくお願いいたします! またどこかでお会いしましょう!

4 years ago, we lost one of our classmates because of his cancer. It was very hard to understand the situation and the true. After we graduated from high school, it has passed 4 years already. Each person goes to each way and we live individually, however we still can feel that he is still with us somewhere.

高校のクラスメイトが亡くなって４年の時が経ちました。当時は状況がよく分からず、癌という病気のことさえあまりよく理解していなかったので、悲しいという感情で精一杯でした。だけれども、こうして久しぶりに卒業後それぞれの道を歩んだクラスメイトに会い、先生や彼のお母様お父様と話すことで、やっぱり彼が私たちに与えてくれた絆や影響は大きく、今もどこかで素晴らしいお母様とお父様と一緒に生き続けているんだと改めて思うことができました。とても素敵なcafe Arietta、またお邪魔させていただきたいと思います:) 本当にありがとうございました^^/

The final trial at Tokyo Japan,

Finally I played the animation game with elementary school students today as the final trial in this project. It gave me lots of improvement for my future works as well as great experiences during playing it, however, I totally think I could achieve the concept, which is producing the new experiences for children to feel reality with this project.

Moreover luckily I got the next topic to confirm how I use the media to create the Communication and Interaction Design for next. I'm interested in many kinds of materials and media, but probably I'm able to try the next project with Shadow again. It still has so much possibility to produce the creativity and communication for me.

Anyway I would like to say thanks for my classmates, teacher, friends and family.

I strongly wish to present my degree project perfectly at the exhibition in the beginning of February at Tokyo Japan, and achieve our dreams!

I still need to improve some parts of this animation game for 18th of January. How I can manage both creative activities and playing shadow for fun is final improvement now. I feel a little bit nervous for coming 18th of January, but also exciting as well:) I really hope I can make great experiences with shadows for kids, and show all of things on the degree exhibition on February 2012.

Hej, everyone! Well, I haven't updated this blog for a long time, but now my degree project is on the right way hopefully! After one trial with kids and mothers in last month, I just have thought about my concept and the project' story again to make all of my ideas clearly. It was a little hard for me, however, finally I could decide how I'm going to do for this project with supports by my teachers and lovely friends.

Today I went to one elementary school which I'm going to play my animation game project at to confirm the size of a stage and screen.

The environment and technical supports such as an audio and projector are perfect. Just the screen is a little smaller than I expected. Try to improve all of size seriously, and make my degree project completely!

The date of playing this animation game at this school with 38 kids is gonna be on 18th of January.. exciting! but I need to work hardly more!!

Have some fika and feel X'mas:）

This year is pretty challenge for me, but I believe we all do our best.

From my experiences, children have been a kind of playing god for me. They have so much possibility to play with various kinds of things. Sometimes I feel that we don't need any help for them to give opportunities to play with any medias.

However, it is very difficult to find the playing which they haven't seen before. Actually we have shadow anywhere, but communicating with their shadow is not usual activity. Especially now in Japan, we have so many great high technical video games, so recent children don't play using their bodies outside compared to the past.

Now I decided to make the animation game as one of their first opportunities to meet new experiences in their life. Improving some parts of the animation game I have made until now, and making the rest of them are for next February.

Today I just watched the all videos which I recorded on last Sunday for a few hours to think about what activities children felt interesting and exciting during playing with their shadow. The pictures are picked up as interesting activities for children by myself.

It seems like children liked having some reaction and communication between each children and developing the ways to play with shadow which they have seen before. I think it is very necessary to know what could make them feel comfortable to make Interaction design, but putting some ideas which I found through some trials on the project successfully is very difficult for me now. Try to think about the ideas more.

I got the old desk when I was 6 years old to study in elementary school from my dad. He designed the very small desk with one concept which was that I had to clean the things on the desk every times when I wanted to use it. Otherwise I couldn't use it without cleaning. However, finally he gave me new big desk to me and my sister to work comfortably:D

We decided to order big desk to combine with old small desk which is on the left side in the picture. Even thought we get new things very easy nowadays, I would like to use things for a long time.

The question of what my purpose to make the animation game as my degree project could be clear through thinking about the relationship between the manual system and communication today.

From last night, I have been just thinking about our manual system in Tokyo Japan. We totally have complete manual system in our society here. The time schedule of arriving and leaving the train are controlled on the manual. Moreover most companies have serious manual to work successfully. It is easy to make manual to control in Tokyo Japan, because we don't have so much nature to destroy our manual. As we know, we had the big earthquake just in this year, but originally we have been successfully controlling all of things on the manual of some rules and high technology systems. But I still think that we need more real reactions to improve some happenings right now.

For example, we have one train' accident today. Basically the trains have the manual sounds to tell which statin we are now to people, but when we have some accidents, the sounds will be changed into real voice to announce "Please take hold of a stick to keep yourself! We're gonna stop the train suddenly!!" At this time, we need newest information, so the comments should be announced by people.

And we have the priority seat mark on the train. It is very clear to understand what it wants to tell us. However, sometimes we need more kind heart to help those kinds of people. Only following the marks is not enough to make all of people feel comfortable.

I finally think we are now needed to have more communications on the manual system. Don't think about only manual is right in Tokyo Japan, We have more opportunities to choose many things. Try to be more free, and make more communication here.

I did the fifth trial of the animation game with 10 kids who are around 4-5 years old and their mothers today. This was my first time to show it to my main target, young kids.

They looked very exciting and enjoying this animation game with their shadow. But it seemed like that I need more stronger concept to make this project and to manage the best situation and time to make them play on it.

My teacher asked me "What the purpose to make this animation game?", I said "Making new experience to children." And teacher said "What can making new experience give to them?"..... ".........."

I did presentation to tell what I did in Umeå Sweden and what I thought about through studying Communication Art and Design for a year to my school mates and a teacher. I needed approximately four months to describe what I exactly thought about in Umeå and what I'm thinking about right now by Japanese, because all of my thinkings were thought by English for a year in Sweden.. It is just translating into Japanese, but it was really difficult for me because I should connect my original thinkings by Japanese with my new idea by English together. It sounds like not so difficult, but it was used about four months to be complete thinkings.

Just living in different place for a year changed me a lot. However, I still have original myself with new thinking ways in Tokyo Japan. Now I feel it is good to be back to original place where I have grown up, lived, studied for a long time to make our thinkings clearly. After that, we can do anything we want anywhere. I hope I'm able to be back to Europe to make myself more stronger and to be creativity. Anyway thanks all.

Today I did one interview to show my works. It was nice to do presentation for some professors come from the great design and art school, but I confirm that I have to be more professional of one study.

The original process of my study was started to know what children feel with their mother and/or some materials during they do some activities.

Through these kinds of experiments, I could know what people are willing to do, and what recent people really need in their life. But I found that if I'm able to design some things to produce their life, it can be more interesting. That's the reason why I started to make some designs and devices to improve our life.

I shouldn't forget the purpose to make designs.

There are so many numbers to calculate to be right.

Through one trial I did yesterday, I saw many size were wrong for kids probably. But it is really easy to change the size of shadow depends on where I put projector on, and how the light can be on the screen. It seems like I need more trial as many as possible.

I did one experiment to see what the tester will feel and active when they play this animation game. There are many eggs which come up from right to left side on the ground and from up to down in this animation. We have to escape eggs with jumping and bending our bodies..

Think about problems of restrictions to play with shadow for children.

I was really confused on my scenario to make my degree project yesterday, but making my ideas clearly helped me to solve my hesitation to decide my main concept for it.

The reason why I couldn't start to make things was that I still wanted to put two concepts which children can get into the story and use their bodies as shadow on the screen with animation. To make a complete story with their shadow is needed many restrictions to control children' expressions and moving freely. However, I wanted to give more creativity and free for them.

Through making my idea clearly, I found one misunderstanding what contents I absolutely need for this project.... They should be appropriate environment and setting situation instead of only story on the book to make children feel they want to play with shadow. In other wards, I NEED TO MAKE THE REASON WHY CHILDREN WANT TO PLAY WITH SHADOW ON THE SCREEN. The way to do that could be the story on the book, but they were not only reading a book. There are still some ways.

Going to be not only on the story would help my problem of restriction hopefully.

Children need more freedom on a few limited environment.

I'm working on my degree project these day, and the exhibition will be opened in the begging of February. I was confused about what I want, but I talked about it with my teacher and friends, so that I could make a point where I'm going to be.

As I described before, I was interested in shadow and children. First inspiration of degree project The shadow is always with us if we have light, however, we are not liable to see that characteristic and changing carefully. Through one workshop which I did two years ago, I found that children are willing to play with their shadow if they have the environment to see themselves clearly.

>How can I make the environment and opportunity to play with shadow for children?

Well, firstly I have decided to make a story on a book and animation to control moving of children' shadow on the screen. Because all of story on the book and animation will be shown directly as I make, so that I need to have some restrictions for children' expressions if I wanna make a complete story for it.

On the other hand, I feel that the shadow playing can be more creativity instead of any restrictions for them..

>Getting into the story

This is also one of my concepts for my degree project. Nowadays most children tend to play a video game, and watch TV for a long time, so they really have a lot of information and knowledge through those medias. But actually they haven't felt, smelled and touched many things which they know. How I can give these kinds of experiences is my main purpose as well as using shadow for my degree project.

Well, it seems like I still have lots of things to think and decide, but I hope it's going to be one of my great works and experiences in my life.

I'm doing internship at one elementary school at Tokyo to teach Art and Design to students for three weeks. I made one point on color to teach for students, and yesterday I did first lesson with them.

We used cameras to take not only things but colors, and finally we could get so many colors.

It is easy to ignore to see colors in Tokyo Japan because there are too many things around us for all of times. But I personally think it can give us more welfare and happiness if we can see them more clearly. Actually we have possibilities to see them, but we have ignored them for long time, so it is little difficult for us. I hope that students will start to see lots of colors through this lesson:）

It was just a view on weekday. I have read approximately 3000 people cross this biggest traffic ways in Shibuya Tokyo once on weekend. How could so many people gather on same place like this?

I don't like the crowd, however, I love so much the places to have a fika and lunch.

You will know how interesting to find places in the crowd area in Tokyo.

I think it's one of attractive points to enjoy in Japan.

Changing an environment

Changing the environment to live could be challenge occasionally because there are big differences between places However, it is also very good chance to recognize how important places there are for me.

Came back to the original environment I have lived for a long time, and get a new member of my family. Great life in anywhere with my lovely people.

At one of central cities in Tokyo called Shinagawa.

We still have some aftershocks since we have had that biggest earthquake. And now we are trying to reduce our life' electricity. Although I haven't seen the places where have been damaged by the earthquake, sometimes I feel that the images even in Tokyo were changed by it as well. Especially for sold things at shops. They don't have spot light we have used before to make them more attractive.

Try to make art and design which can attract people instead of any spot light or with natural light such as sunshine.

One of my favorite cities called Nakameguro in Tokyo.

Everything is complete here, but I wondered where irregular vegetables which I have seen in the other country are. We just take complete ones and throw rest of them away.

I have been in Tokyo for almost 1 month after came back from Sweden. Sometimes Tokyo such as the biggest city makes me confuse because here has everything, so it is very difficult to think what I can make in Tokyo. We can get everything anytime we want. We don't have problem but I think it is problem actually.

Luckily I have many people whom I can ask those kind of problems, Thanks a lot:）

I just remember some of my friends, who come from Umea Sweden and live in Tokyo now, said that it is really challenge to survive in Tokyo. It might be true.

I think the most busy time in Taiwan is in the morning.

They go out to eat a breakfast every morning. People ask me that I don't go out to eat it in Japan, I said of course not:D They said it's cheap and they can get great foods if they go out. Actually they are very delicious but I always feel pretty full:D

Go to south part of Taiwan called Kaosiung, 高雄.

So many local things, taiwanese life style here. There were lots of things I haven't seen in Tokyo. I think it's very attractive to visit not capital but country side if you have been this country before. Although I like Taipei, Tokyo such as big cities, there are lots of great things in country side:）

Great foods and people, different cultures.

In Taiwan, it is cheaper and convenient to buy foods in outside.

I thought we don't have any differences between Taiwan and japan, but I can see many different things here. A great time in hot country Taiwan:）

Sometimes I feel Tokyo is too much.

Too many people, too much information even some great products and design.

In contrast, there are not so many minds. How come?

Don't think too much, just go. But it's difficult in Tokyo.

Fika in Tokyo

The weather in Tokyo is crazy these day, but still there are great place to have a fika and to make a relax.

One of my favorite shops in Tokyo is YOSHIDA & CO., LTD. which makes great products such as bags and porches. Time to enjoy a summer:）

The rainy season in Tokyo

In Japan it's really hot and wet because of the rainy season right now.

Great Japanese food, transport, stylish design and fashionable clothing.
I can go to a convenience store opening for 24 hours to buy anything I want.
I don't need to wait a train, delivery food and service for long time,
maybe just few minutes.

Everything is very convenience but I'm confused what we need right now.
Have many things but no time in Tokyo Japan.

Of course I love Tokyo because I have grown up here for 20 years,
it's kind of my home town.
Now time to rethink about our Tokyo life:）
I think it will be fine to just have many fika for making a relax and
communication, isn't it? :D

Pizza rolls

The time passed super fast after came back to Tokyo. I still feel that Tokyo is too big and there are many peoples, so I have just stayed at home for one week :D

I have made one page of school magazine which introduces the recipe for students at school since 2009. During my life in Umea I continued to show Swedish foods -carrot cake, meat ball and pea soup- from Umea to Tokyo. About TGU kitchen.

In this time I'm going to introduce "Pizza rolls", which Swedish people love very much on the magazine. One of my old classmates gave me some articles about pizza rolls. It was really interesting:）I became person who loves Swedish more and more :D

Hopefully I can show it here soon:）

Thinking about degree project.

I will have degree project for graduation of BA course, Communication Art and Design, at Tokyo Gakugei University on January.

During europe trip, I have tried one of shadow science game, which I could keep my shadows for 10 seconds on the screen.

It was very interesting to save our shadow for playing. I have tried these kind of game with children two years ago in Tokyo.

It could changed any play by children because it didn't have any particular rules. I'm thinking how I could try it with some animations and sounds to express children's mind with it.

Come back to Tokyo Japan.

On 20th of June, I came back to home safely in Tokyo Japan from Umea Sweden. My life in Umea was really nice with great friends and teachers, much natures, sweet fika and Swedish lifestyle. I have grown up in Tokyo as the one of most biggest city in the world for more than 20 years. Now every happening in Umea was like in the dream for me in Tokyo.

I haven't seen these lots of people and high buildings in Sweden. Everything is different from Umea. So sometimes I'm confused by Tokyo Japan as the big city but I really like Japanese food at all:）

And I try to have a Fika - Swedish break time - in Tokyo as well:）

Please tell me if you will come to Japan:）

Travel in Europe

I went travel to Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Berlin and Hamburg before go back to Tokyo Japan from 7th to 20th of June.

It was my first time traveling in Europe in the summer. Everything was very beautiful and freedom for me. Hopefully come back to Europe soon!

How many color in the rainbow?

In Japan we will say the rainbow has seven colors if someone ask us. But Swedish said the rainbow has six colors. And Germany and Taiwanese said it has five. It made me confused.

I have searched about the rainbow. Long time ago we said it had just three colors red, blue and yellow.
After several years, we changed it had five and now we normally say it has seven colors because Isaac Newton who was English physicist, mathematician and natural philosopher announced the rainbow had seven colors around 300 years ago.

It is very difficult to explain why we see different colors in the rainbow.. But it's still really interesting for me. Because each people see same things as different colors every time.

For dog and cat, they don't see colors like peoples. They can't see many colors because their smell and hearing are very good. So their eye became can't see many color, and I can say they don't need to see colors.

Next goal will be how I can tell that we have many kind of way to view colors for children. Have a nice weekend:）

Color

I have done a workshop about color for children on Apr 2009. On that time, I and my classmate at Tokyo had some concepts about color for children, which we would like to make them to see more color in their life. Because we don't notice many color even we have so many in our life.

When I was elementary school student, I had twelve kinds of color pencil. I assumed we only have twelve kinds of color in our life because those pencils were twelve. They were like blue is blue, green is green and red is red...

I was not sure children also think about same things as me, but I wanted to make sure what they think about color. And if they don't see many color with their eyes, I thought I wanted to show them for children.

I and my classmates tried to make them to see color with camera. Usually we use a camera to take a picture has peoples and some landscape to remember a memory. But we tried to take color with camera.
They are those pictures that children took.

They also thought about color is not so many it's like I thought before.

After that workshop, I haven't do anything. But now I'm studying color again in Graphic Design course in Umea Sweden. I think probably I could continue to make some things for them to study color.

I'm trying to make some books about color for them, which they can study it by themselves. They are sketch for books.

From tomorrow we will have class again:）It was so nice Easter holiday in Helsinki with Dean. Time to work:）

Marimekko "WHY NOT TOGETHER"

I have taken part in one competition of Finish brand "Marimekko" on Feb 2011.

I joined it with vegetable's bags.

Few days after I submitted it, they told me it was chosen as final.

On 12th to 17th of Apr 2011, they held the exhibition with my vegetable's bags in Milan Italy.

Hej, I'm Yui Komatsu. I'm studying Graphic design as exchange student at Umea University in Sweden from Tokyo Japan. I would like to show my experience and some works on this blog.
